Concept

Influence of text structure and prior knowledge of the learner on reading comprehension, browsing and perceived control

In this study, researchers were interested in the effects of traditional linear text, hierarchical hypertext, and mixed hypertext structures on reading comprehension for participants with and without prior knowledge. After reading each passage, participants were given a questionnaire about perceived control and a reading comprehension test. The researchers concluded that the hierarchical hypertext structure is the best text structure for readers without any prior knowledge because the text organization makes it easier to understand the passage.
