Case Study

Labor Union Negotiation Strategy

A labor union in a region experiencing a period of sustained economic growth and low unemployment is preparing for contract negotiations. A faction within the union argues against prioritizing strong job security clauses, believing that the vibrant job market makes it easy for any laid-off worker to find a new position quickly. Union leadership, however, references a major economic study of a similar prosperous period (1993-2004) which found that the overall value of keeping one's job versus being unemployed remained substantially high. Based on the findings of this study, formulate the core argument the union leadership should use to justify its focus on job security.
