Lack of Causal Inference in Observational Research

A fundamental limitation of observational research is its inability to support cause-and-effect conclusions. Because this approach is inherently non-experimental—meaning the researcher does not manipulate or control any variables—it can only provide a descriptive snapshot of characteristics or behaviors as they naturally occur, rather than identifying underlying causal mechanisms.
