Lesions in the Amygdala Affect Fear Responses

-Patient S.M. experienced a rare genetic disorder that caused an accumulation of calcium deposits in the amygdala, which in turn, eventually destroyed the nuclei in both cerebral hemispheres.

-When Patient S.M. was shown movie clips that other people with an intact amygdala found frightening, she reported to feel little or no fear.

-Patient S.M. was unable to recognize facial expressions of fear in other people, but was able to recognize facial expressions for different emotions.
