Levitt and List (2007) on the Generalizability of Lab Experiments

In their influential 2007 paper, Steven Levitt and John List raised critical questions about the external validity of laboratory experiments that measure social preferences. They argue that factors such as the increased scrutiny from observers, the specific context of the lab, and the self-selection of participants can cause behavior in experiments to differ systematically from behavior in the real world, thereby limiting the predictive power of such lab results.
