Luxury Consumption as a Public Bad

In models of conspicuous consumption, the consumption of luxury goods by the wealthy functions as a 'public bad'. This occurs because, beyond the private utility gained by the consumer, this consumption negatively impacts other members of society by directly reducing their own utility.
