Case Study

Predicting Economic Behavior in Two Fictional Towns

Town A and Town B are identical in every way (population, average income, industry) except for one key difference. In Town A, income is distributed very evenly among its residents. In Town B, a small number of households earn vastly more than everyone else, and they frequently display their wealth through large houses, luxury cars, and expensive vacations. Based on the theory of consumption driven by social comparison, in which town would you predict the average non-wealthy resident works longer hours, and why?
