The coarse focusing knob is utilized to bring a microscopic image into initial focus by making large-scale vertical adjustments to raise or lower the stage. It is primarily used in conjunction with lower magnification objective lenses, such as $${}4	imes$$ and $${}10	imes$$.

An illuminator provides the intense lighting required to properly observe highly magnified images, which naturally become dimmer as magnification increases. In a brightfield microscope, this light source is typically a high-intensity bulb situated below the stage.

Microscope Illuminator

The condenser is a lens positioned below the microscope stage that maximizes illumination by focusing all light rays from the illuminator directly onto the specimen. Its vertical position is adjusted via the condenser focus knob to find the optimal distance, after which it should not be moved for brightness adjustments.

Condenser Lens

The diaphragm is an adjustable mechanism situated between the condenser lens and the specimen that regulates light exposure. If less-than-maximal illumination is required, users can easily control the amount of light striking the specimen by opening or closing the diaphragm.

Microscope Diaphragm

A rheostat functions as a dimmer switch on a microscope, providing an alternative method to regulate image brightness. It achieves this by directly controlling the electrical intensity of the high-intensity bulb within the illuminator.
