Case Study

Optimal Sequencing of Market Structure Topics

An economics instructor is planning their syllabus and is deciding the order in which to teach two key market models. One model examines firms that produce unique, differentiated goods and have the power to choose their own price. The other model examines markets with numerous firms selling identical products, where each firm must accept the prevailing market price. The instructor believes that the model where firms accept the market price is simpler and should therefore be taught first. Evaluate the instructor's reasoning. Should the model of price-setting firms or price-taking firms be taught first? Justify your conclusion by explaining the conceptual building blocks each model provides for understanding how markets work.
