Pedagogical Sequencing of Market Models

In economics, two fundamental market structures are often studied. The first is a model where firms produce differentiated products and have the power to set their own prices. The second is a model where many firms sell an identical product and must accept the prevailing market price, acting as 'price-takers'. Analyze why it is pedagogically sound to study the price-setting model before tackling the price-taking model. In your analysis, consider what foundational concepts are established by the first model that simplify the understanding of the second.
