Propagation of Economic Shocks Through Consumption

When a household experiences a negative income shock, such as job loss, and cannot smooth its consumption, the resulting decrease in spending is not contained. This reduction in demand transfers the economic shock to other entities, particularly the producers and sellers of goods and services, causing the initial shock to ripple through the wider economy.
