Repetitions and Contradictions in COVID-19 Research Communication (Topic Sprint Findings)
During a COVID-19 topic sprint, researchers found that scientific findings shared through tweets, preprints, and news coverage were frequently repetitive, contradictory, or later shown to be false. Tracking and reconciling these conflicting claims consumed researcher time and energy that could otherwise go toward new research. The examples collected under this node illustrate this barrier, such as contradictory public-health guidance (masks, hydroxychloroquine, transmission by children or cats) and disputed IFR estimates from the WHO.
