Roberto Rocha has a twitter thread on the conversation between scientists on finding a consensus about covid-19

"Every day there is a new study on COVID-19 that contradicts a previous one.

Example: Does smoking protect against it or make it worse?

Here's a story in favour of smoking (French): https://lemonde.fr/planete/article/2020/04/22/coronavirus-une-proportion-reduite-de-fumeurs-parmi-les-malades_6037365_3244.html

And one against: https://ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/covid-19-seems-to-be-hitting-smokers-more-severely-scientists-warn-1.4884862

What should we make of this? Is the media confused? Do scientists have no clue what's going on?

Actually, this is proof that science is alive and well. This is a new virus, and we're in the early stages of research.

Right now, studies on COVID-19 are a conversation between scientists. "Hey, I found this interesting correlation using this specific setup. You might want to take a deeper look."

For the general public it might seem like chaos, but we're overhearing a big room with many convos.

I suspect we're still a few months, if not years from having a general consensus on the disease as more ideas are tested and discarded.

In the meantime, it's important to read past the headlines and see what the study's caveats are. "
