Family intervention is a vital component of schizophrenia treatment that involves both patients and their families. It takes into account the important role that families play in the recovery of individuals with schizophrenia as well as the emotional toll that this role can have on family members. Not only has it been known to reduce symptoms and decrease the risk of relapse in those with schizophrenia but it has also helped to alleviate the sense of burden felt by family members. 

Family Intervention Therapy for Schizophrenia Patients and Family Members 

Caregiver's (including family of patients with schizophrenia) quality of life (QOL) could impact on patients QOL as well as symptoms. Therefore, the poor caregiver's QOL is not beneficial to the patient's rehabilitation. A research also confirmed that the caregiver's QOL affected the patient's psychotic symptoms and QOL. In recent years there are more attention on caregiver's mental health and QOL.

The difficulties that families and caregivers experience in having to care for chronically ill family members with schizophrenia which could lead to damage on their own mental health.

Schizophrenia is a severe psychological disorder that leads to a profound breakdown in an individual's ability to function, often necessitating hospitalization. Individuals with schizophrenia on average have lower overall physical health and are at increased risk of infection with COVID-19 due to decreased cognitive ability and decision making capacity. In addition, the psychotic symptoms associated with schizophrenia may be heightened due to social distancing and isolation practices. These practices can make basic services and support difficult to access for schizophrenic patients, making them more vulnerable to a negative impact on their mental health.

Treatment of Schizophrenia 

Studies have found that apart from the genetic factors that are responsible for schizophrenia, there is also a variety of stressful events that may increases the risk of developing schizophrenia. Some of them are:

Role of Environmental Factors in Schizophrenia 

There is evidence of increased neuroinflammation and inflammatory cytokines in the CSF of schizophrenia patients within 5 years of onset, as well as increased microglia density in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Abnormal microglia density in the temporal lobe seems to be consistent across all schizophrenia patients, but there appears to be some nuanced differences among different subtypes and among the brains of patients who died by suicide versus not. Antipsychotic exposure seems to impact microglial density and inflammation, but this is not yet well understood.

Though there is no cure for schizophrenia, many patients do well with minimal symptoms. A variety of antipsychotic medications are effective in reducing the psychotic symptoms present in the acute phase of the illness, and they also help reduce the potential for future acute episodes and their severity. Environmental Risk Factors of Schizophrenia

An uninterrupted illness featuring at some time a major depressive episode, manic episode, or mixed episode concurrently with characteristic symptoms of schizophrenia (e.g., delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, catatonic behavior) and, in the same period, delusions or hallucinations for at least 2 weeks in the absence of prominent mood symptoms. Downward drift is the term given to the deterioration of the lives of individuals suffering from schizophrenia in which the disorder leads them to poverty, which obstructs their capability to work.
