Shabestari's Justification for Sufi Metaphorical Language
In Section 50 of Golshan-e Raz, Mahmud Shabestari explains why Sufis employ sensory metaphors like the 'curl' (zulf), 'cheek' (rukh), and 'mole' (khal) to describe spiritual realities. Because language was initially created to describe the physical world, it is inherently limited and cannot fully capture infinite, formless spiritual meanings. Therefore, the 'people of heart' (Sufis) are compelled to use sensible forms as analogies for divine attributes, such as using the cheek and curl to represent God's Beauty/Grace (Jamal/Lutf) and Majesty/Wrath (Jalal/Qahr), asserting that the material world is merely a reflection of the spiritual realm.
