Slope of a Vertical Line

The slope of a vertical line, given by an equation of the form x=ax = a, is undefined. Because every point on a vertical line has the same x-coordinate, there is no horizontal change between any two points — the run is 00. Substituting into the slope formula gives m=rise0m = \frac{\text{rise}}{0}, and since division by zero has no defined value, the slope does not exist.
