Steps in Shaping
The process of shaping involves a series of steps to guide an organism toward a target behavior. Initially, any response that vaguely resembles the desired behavior is reinforced. Subsequently, reinforcement is selectively applied only to behaviors that are progressively closer to the target, while reinforcement for earlier, less accurate responses is discontinued. This continues by rewarding closer and closer approximations until, finally, reinforcement is given only when the specific desired behavior is performed.
