Concept
Study Interventions for Motivational Interviewing
- Motivational Interviewing (MI): The intervention that participants received included feedback, importance and confidence rulers, making change plans, and further directional activities and skills. These were made in order to evoke change talk and increase the commitment to change certain behaviors.
- Spirit Only MI (SOMI): This intervention was mostly client-centered and had elements of MI, including a therapist stance, emphasizing the client’s responsibility to change their behavior, working together, using reflective listening skills, and avoiding behaviors that are aligned with MI.
- Non-therapy Condition (NTC): This intervention was made to include elements that are thought to help with change, though they are not connected to relational or technical therapy strategies. Some of the elements include normative feedback, personal responsibility, and the attempt to promote confidence.
- Therapists and training: Five therapists in the study were giving MI and SOMI-centered therapy. Four of the therapists had experience giving MI and were also experienced in substance use disorders. All of the therapists were given 3-hour training sessions, and weekly group and individual sessions.
- Condition fidelity and discriminability: Commitment was determined by using the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Code. On the other hand, discrimination was determined by looking at MITI coding, specific technique behavioral counts, and DARN-C coding. These helped in deciding if the conditions were met and if there were any changes in change talk.
