Sweden's 1967 Switch to Right-Hand Traffic

On September 3, 1967, Sweden executed a government-mandated, nationwide switch from left-hand to right-hand traffic. The change was precisely timed: driving on the left was the rule until 5:00 p.m., and at 5:01 p.m., all traffic was required to begin driving on the right. This event, which followed extensive organization and publicity, initially led to a period of chaos as drivers adjusted. However, the new right-hand traffic rule was quickly established as the new, stable norm.
