In this narrative from Farid al-Din Attar's Elahi-Nameh, the Sufi master Yusuf of Hamadan recounts an anecdote about the Prophet Joseph (Yusuf) and Zulaykha. When confronted by noblemen who urge him to return Zulaykha's broken heart, Joseph replies that he never intentionally sought to steal it. He explains that he has 'lost his own heart' for twenty years and cannot be held responsible for capturing another's. Attar uses this story to illustrate the Sufi concept of absolute surrender to the Divine: a true spiritual figure has lost their ego and heart in Divine contemplation. Being completely devoid of self, they become an unintentional mirror for Divine love, possessing no 'heart' of their own to either actively give or steal.
