In this narrative from Farid al-Din Attar's Elahi-Nameh, which directly follows the tale of Joseph claiming to have lost his heart, Zulaykha is asked how Joseph captured hers. She responds that since Joseph has no heart, she too has lost hers, concluding that 'neither this beloved nor that lover existed.' Attar uses this story to illustrate the Sufi concept of fana (annihilation of the self). It demonstrates that in the highest state of Divine love, the individual identities and egos of both the lover and the beloved completely dissolve, leaving nothing but the Divine presence.
