The Allegory of Searching for Camels on the Palace Roof in the Masnavi
In Book Four, Section 34 of the Masnavi, Rumi narrates the dramatic climax of Ibrahim ibn Adham's renunciation through the dialogue of the roof-walkers searching for lost camels.
The Climax of Awakening
While Ibrahim Adham is seated on his throne, he hears footsteps from the palace roof. Upon demanding who is there, a group replies that they are searching for their lost camels. When the king points out the absurdity of looking for camels on a roof, they deliver the spiritual strike: 'How, then, do you seek to meet God while sitting on a throne of worldly power?'
Spiritual Meaning
Rumi uses this story to illustrate the incompatibility of worldly attachment and the spiritual quest. True spiritual seeking (talab) requires the total abandonment of ego and earthly sovereignty. The shock of this realization causes Ibrahim Adham to immediately flee his palace, vanishing from public view to live in spiritual poverty (faqr).
