The Concept of Need (Niyaz) and Divine Grace in the Masnavi

In Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, the concept of human need (niyaz), pain, and distress is portrayed as the fundamental mechanism that attracts divine grace and provision. Rumi teaches that God creates everything in response to a pre-existing need, famously advising seekers to 'seek less water and acquire thirst.' Therefore, cultivating genuine spiritual emptiness and realizing one's absolute dependence on the Divine guarantees God's answering response. In this theological framework, human distress itself acts as the primary witness of worthiness for God's blessings.
