The Impact of Communication on Strategic Decision-Making

Consider a game show scenario where two contestants have jointly accumulated a cash prize. In the final round, they must independently and secretly decide to either 'Split' the prize or 'Steal' it. The outcomes are as follows:

  • If both choose 'Split', they each receive half of the prize.
  • If one chooses 'Steal' and the other chooses 'Split', the 'Steal' player gets the entire prize, and the 'Split' player gets nothing.
  • If both choose 'Steal', they both get nothing.

A key rule of the game is that before making their secret choice, the contestants are given a few minutes to talk to each other.

Analyze how this pre-decision communication phase can fundamentally alter the players' strategic thinking and the potential outcome of the game, compared to a version where no such communication is allowed.
