The Instability of Cooperation

Consider a one-shot game where two players face a situation with the classic structure of a prisoners' dilemma. The 'cooperative' outcome, where both players choose not to defect, results in a good, mutually beneficial payoff. However, this outcome is often not reached. Analyze the decision-making process of a single, rational player and explain precisely why they have a powerful incentive to choose the 'defect' strategy, even if they know cooperation is better for the group as a whole.
