Case Study

The Roommate Cleaning Dilemma

Two roommates, Alex and Ben, agree that their shared apartment needs cleaning. They can either 'Cooperate' (both spend Saturday cleaning) or 'Defect' (not clean and hope the other person does).

  • If both Cooperate, they get a clean apartment and still have some free time. This is a good outcome for both.
  • If both Defect, the apartment remains messy, which is a bad outcome for both.
  • If one roommate Cooperates and the other Defects, the defector gets a clean apartment for free (the best individual outcome) while the cooperator wastes their entire Saturday cleaning alone (the worst individual outcome).

Analyze the situation from Alex's perspective. Assuming Alex believes Ben will Cooperate and clean, explain the specific incentive that might lead Alex to Defect.
