The Invocation of Poetic Meaning and the Capture of the Lover in Section 22 of the Khosrow Nameh
In Section 22 of the Khosrow Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar begins by invoking his poetic muse, calling upon the 'brides of speech' (bakr-e ma'ni) to emerge from behind the veil of silence and bring the love story of Khosrow and Gol to light. The narrative then shifts to the first look (negah) exchanged between the lovers: when Gol looks at Hormoz, Hormoz is instantly captivated, symbolizing the classical Persian literary trope of the lover's soul as a wild bird (morgh-e sarkash) falling helplessly into the snare (dam) of the beloved's beauty.
