The Madman's Definition of Spiritual Pain in Elahi Nameh

In Attar's 'Elahi Nameh', the madman defines 'pain' (درد) not as physical suffering, but as an existential and spiritual longing. When asked what pain is, he describes it as the agonizing state of desiring something intensely without knowing exactly what it is ('که چیزی بایدت کانرا ندانی'). In the Sufi context, this represents the soul's innate, bewildered yearning for the Divine, recognizing its own incompleteness but unable to fully grasp the nature of its ultimate Beloved.
