یکی پرسید ازان دیوانه مردی
که چه بود درد چون داری تو دردی؟

چنین گفت او که دردآنست پیوست
که چون باید بریده دست را دست

و یا آن تشنهٔ ده روزه را نیز
چگونه آب باید از همه چیز

کسی را هم چنان باید خدا را
ترا گر نیست این این هست ما را

همی درد آن بود ای زندگانی
که چیزی بایدت کانرا ندانی

ندانی آن و آن خواهی همیشه
ندانم کین چه کارست و چه پیشه

جز او هرچت بود باشد همه پیچ
که آن خواهی و آن خواهی دگر هیچ

English translation

Someone asked that madman, 'What is pain, since you have a pain?' He spoke thus: 'Pain is always this: Like when a severed hand needs a hand, Or for a thirsty person of ten days, How water is needed more than anything; Someone must need God just like that. If you do not have this [pain], we have it. Pain is this, O life: That you need something and you do not know it. You do not know it, and you always want it. I do not know what kind of work and profession this is. Other than Him, whatever you have is all entanglement; For you want that, and you want nothing else.'
