The Metaphor of the Empty Drum: Outward Form vs. Inner Reality

In the Masnavi, Rumi frequently contrasts imposing outward physical forms with a lack of inner substance or courage. A prime example is the metaphor of the empty drum, which makes a loud, intimidating noise but is completely hollow inside. This theme is vividly illustrated in Section 90 through the story of a physically huge but cowardly man who likens himself to an empty drum, as well as in the subsequent Section 91 through the tale of a heavily armed rider who is easily frightened despite his fearsome appearance. These intertwined parables serve to teach learners to look past superficial, intimidating forms and recognize that true strength, courage, and spiritual meaning (ma'ni) reside solely within.
