The Metaphor of the Water Jug and the Senses in the Masnavi

In Book 11 of Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, the Bedouin’s wife establishes the metaphor of the water jug (سبوسبو) as a representation of the 'confined body' (تنمحصورتن محصور). The 'briny water' (آبشورآب شور) within the jug symbolizes the limited and often tainted perceptions of the human senses. Rumi describes the jug as having 'five spouts' (پنجلولهپنج لوله), explicitly identifying them with the 55 physical senses. He instructs the seeker to keep this 'water' pure from every impurity so that the individual soul may find a 'passage toward the Sea' (منفذسویبحرمنفذ سوی بحر). This teaching emphasizes that ordinary human perceptions are merely a 'drop' (قطرهقطره) compared to the infinite 'river of purity' (نهرصفانهر صفا) that characterizes divine reality. By offering this humble gift to the 'Sultan' (the Divine), the seeker's limited consciousness is transformed and integrated into the infinite sea of divinity.
