Noah's Discourse on Spiritual Annihilation (Fana) in the Masnavi

In Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, Prophet Noah's warning to his rebellious people serves as a profound exposition on the Sufi concept of fana, or the complete annihilation of the ego. Noah declares to his detractors that his individual self has perished ('I am not I') and that he now exists entirely through the Divine. Echoing a famous Hadith Qudsi, he states that God has literally become his hearing, perception, and sight. Rumi emphasizes this hidden divine majesty by contrasting the prophet's outward human frailty—likened to a humble 'fox'—with the immense spiritual power of a 'lion' concealed within. The passage culminates by explaining that a heart perfectly purified of worldly attachments and ego-driven images becomes a flawless mirror, fully capable of reflecting the hidden realities and 'forms of the Unseen.'
