The Miracle of the Speaking Pebbles in Abu Jahl's Hand (Masnavi)

In Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, the anecdote of the pebbles speaking in Abu Jahl's hand serves as a profound illustration of divine omnipotence and the undeniable truth of prophethood. Abu Jahl, a staunch opponent of the Prophet Muhammad (referred to as Ahmad), conceals stones in his fist and challenges the Prophet to guess what he is holding, testing his claim to heavenly knowledge. Instead of merely guessing, the Prophet offers a greater miracle: the objects themselves will testify to his truth. Miraculously, the stones in Abu Jahl's hand begin to speak, reciting the Islamic declaration of faith ('La ilaha illa Allah') and confirming Muhammad's role as the Messenger of God. However, rather than accepting this clear sign, Abu Jahl reacts with rage and throws the stones to the ground. Rumi uses this narrative to highlight that spiritual blindness and deeply rooted hostility cannot be cured even by the most undeniable, miraculous evidence, emphasizing the contrast between divine truth and willful ignorance.
