The Prophet's Repentance and Continuous Spiritual Elevation in the Masnavi
In Book Four, Section 126 of the Masnavi, Rumi explores the deeper meaning behind the Hadith in which the Prophet Muhammad states he seeks God's forgiveness seventy times a day. Rather than viewing this as atonement for literal sins, Rumi interprets the Prophet's continuous repentance as a dynamic process of spiritual elevation and divine intoxication. In Sufi thought, this type of repentance signifies a constant turning away from a lower spiritual station toward a higher one, illustrating an unending journey into the boundless mercy and knowledge of God.
