Iblis's Confession and the Spiritual Value of Remorse in the Masnavi

In Book 2 of Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, the tense interrogation between Mu'awiya and Iblis (Satan) concludes when the devil finally confesses his true motive for waking the ruler for morning prayer. Iblis admits that his action was not an act of piety, but rather a calculated spiritual theft. He explains that if Mu'awiya had overslept and missed the congregational prayer, he would have been consumed by intense grief, shedding tears from profound remorse and spiritual pain. Rumi uses Iblis's admission to highlight a core Sufi concept: the burning need, sorrow, and genuine repentance born from missing a religious duty possess a "radiance" worth more than a hundred routine, mechanical prayers. By waking Mu'awiya, Iblis intentionally deprived him of this highly elevated state of spiritual yearning and sincere need.
