The Self-Correcting Nature of a Pre-Industrial Economy

An economic model developed in the early 19th century describes a 'vicious circle of poverty' to explain why living standards remained stagnant for centuries. This model is based on two fundamental relationships: one connecting the size of the population to the average income per person, and another connecting the average income per person back to the size of the population. Analyze how these two relationships interact to create a self-correcting system that tends to keep the population at a subsistence level of income. In your answer, be sure to explain the effect of a temporary, positive shock to the economy, such as a particularly good harvest.
