The Symbolism of the Cow in Sufi Dream Interpretation

In Persian Sufi literature, the cow in dreams is traditionally interpreted as a symbol of agricultural abundance, the material year, or physical sustenance. Sanai defines this in the Hadiqat ('A cow is the proof of a year of abundance'). This direct literal symbolism of the cow underpins the more complex spiritual allegories found in later works, such as Jalal al-Din Rumi's commentary in the Masnavi on the Quranic dream of Pharaoh, where the physical form of the cow in the dream mirror represents hidden spiritual dimensions and trials.
