The Concept of Exemplification (Tamatthul) in Sufi Dream Interpretation

In Sufi dream theory, particularly as formulated by Sanai in the Hadiqat al-Haqiqah, dream interpretation relies on the concept of tamatthul (exemplification or imaginal representation). This principle holds that while humans are asleep to spiritual realities in the physical world, the soul perceives these realities in the imaginal realm through sensory symbols. Under this framework, abstract spiritual or psychological states are translated into corresponding physical forms (for example, anger is represented as a fierce fire, and lawful sustenance as pure water). Understanding this symbolic translation is necessary for decoding the moral and spiritual lessons hidden in dreams.
