Threat vs. Challenge Appraisal
During primary appraisal, a stressor can be judged in different ways. It is appraised as a 'threat' if it is anticipated to lead to negative outcomes such as harm or loss. Conversely, it is appraised as a 'challenge' if it is seen as holding potential for personal growth or gain.
