Three Common Electrical Panel Project Levels

Electrical contractors often group panel-related work into three practical levels. A same-capacity panel changeout addresses a failed, obsolete, or recalled unit without increasing the service size; the job includes removing the old equipment, installing the new panel, reconnecting the branch circuits, testing the system, and passing inspection. A service increase raises the available amperage, such as moving from 100 amps to 200 amps, and usually adds a load calculation, permit work, new service conductors, coordination with the utility, and final approval. A service increase with added loads combines the capacity increase with new dedicated circuits for equipment like an EV charger, HVAC equipment, or a rooftop solar system, and it can also require a subpanel.
