Types and Driving Forces of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)

The DSM-5 has recognized three types of ARFID based on the driving forces behind the avoidant/restrictive eating. However, it is important to note that these driving forces may coincide with one another and that there are likely additional factors that may contribute to the development and progression of ARFID:

  1. Lack of interest
  2. Sensory avoidance
  3. Fear of aversive consequences
