Ways to Incorporate Theory into Research
When writing research reports or planning presentations, researchers typically incorporate scientific theories in one of two basic ways. The first approach is to raise a new research question, conduct a study to answer it, and subsequently offer one or more theories to interpret the results; this is ideal for applied questions or when existing theories are insufficient. The second approach is to describe existing theories, derive a hypothesis from one of them, test it in a new study, and then reevaluate the theory based on the findings, which is effective when established theories already address the topic.

Arrange the steps of the hypothetico-deductive method in the correct cyclical order, starting from the foundational framework.
In the hypothetico-deductive method, which of the following best explains why the process is described as a 'cyclical' framework for scientific inquiry?
A social psychologist is studying the 'bystander effect' using the hypothetico-deductive method. Match each specific activity from their research process to the stage of the method it best illustrates.
True or False: In the hypothetico-deductive method, the primary purpose of deriving a specific hypothesis from a theory is to create a testable prediction that, if contradicted by empirical data, necessitates a reevaluation of the theory's accuracy.
In the hypothetico-deductive method, a researcher who refuses to modify their original conceptual framework despite repeated empirical contradictions is failing to perform the _____ stage, which is the critical point where a scientist must judge the framework's validity based on new results.
Imagine you are a researcher who observes that 'students seem to solve complex math puzzles more quickly when they are in a room with blue walls compared to red walls.' Which of the following research proposals best constructs a complete application of the hypothetico-deductive method to investigate this phenomenon?
In the hypothetico-deductive method, the research process is a linear sequence that terminates once empirical tests are completed and data are collected.
Match each stage of the hypothetico-deductive method with the description that best summarizes its conceptual purpose in scientific inquiry.

When established scientific theories already address a research topic, which approach do researchers typically use to incorporate theory into their study?
Arrange the steps a researcher typically follows when an established scientific theory already addresses their research topic.
Imagine Dr. Singh is investigating a novel, applied problem regarding remote learning for which existing psychological theories are insufficient. According to typical research practices, the most appropriate way for him to incorporate theory is to first derive a hypothesis from an established theory, test it, and then reevaluate the theory based on his findings.
Researchers integrate theory into their work differently depending on the state of the existing literature. Match each research scenario or situation to the specific approach or justification for theory incorporation.
Design a structural framework for a research report investigating 'The impact of haptic feedback on virtual surgical training,' a novel area where existing psychological theories are currently insufficient. Which sequence of theoretical integration should you construct to most effectively bridge this gap?
According to typical research practices in psychology, if existing theories are insufficient to address a research topic, researchers should begin by deriving a hypothesis from an established theory to test in their study.
A researcher who chooses to interpret their results only after a study is complete, despite the presence of well-established frameworks on the topic, is arguably neglecting the more rigorous scientific opportunity to _____ the existing theory based on their new findings.
