When Time-and-Materials Billing Fits Uncertain Service Jobs

Time-and-materials billing charges for the actual labor time spent plus the cost of the parts used. It is a good fit when the work cannot be predicted in advance, such as tracing an intermittent fault, repairing hidden damage, or replacing old wiring, because the final amount of work is not known at the start. A key benefit is that the contractor is paid for the real effort required. A key drawback is that customers may worry about an open-ended bill, so the contractor should give a price range before starting and update the customer promptly if the job is likely to exceed it.
