Adding Integers with Different Signs

When adding positive and negative integers, the two-color counter model provides a clear visual way to determine the result without memorizing formal rules. By combining the positive and negative counters, you can easily see whether there are more positive or more negative counters. Because one positive and one negative counter form a neutral pair with a value of zero, the type of counters that are more numerous will dictate the sign of the final sum. The counters left over after the neutral pairs cancel out represent the sum's value. For example, when adding 5+3-5 + 3, the negative counters outnumber the positives, resulting in a negative sum. Conversely, when adding 5+(3)5 + (-3), the positives outnumber the negatives, resulting in a positive sum.
