Air Pollution: California (USA) (Post-COVID-19)

Researchers studying California, USA found varying levels of air pollution from January to June 2020 may have been the result of COVID-19 lockdowns.

  • NO2 levels dropped 38%, CO levels dropped 49%, and PM2.5 levels dropped 31%
  • PM10 levels increased 21% and O3 levels increased 14%
  • After lockdowns were lifted, PM2.5 levels increased 17%, PM10 levels increased 114%, and O3 levels increased 4%
  • Monitoring by NASA's Aura satellite showed overall NO2 levels decreased 33% during lockdown, with a lower mean value than in the previous four years
