Air Pollution: Malaysia (Post-COVID-19)

Researchers studying Malaysia during the 2020 Malaysia Movement Control Order (MCO) found air quality may have improved as a result of their COVID-19 lock down. Though other factors may have contributed, researchers believe the MCO was the main factor in reduced air pollution.

  • PM2.5 levels decreased ~28.3% in "red zone" areas where COVID-19 infections were highest
  • Overall, PM2.5 levels decreased ~58.4%
  • Decreases in PM2.5 levels as compared to levels pre-MCO were seen at 50% of all air quality monitoring stations across the country
