Cannabinoids as an alternative treatment for bipolar affective disorder
Current bipolar disorder treatments have drawbacks and side effects. Sodium valproate is risky for women of childbearing age, and lamotrigine requires precise dosage control. Conventional antidepressants and electroconvulsive therapy can worsen symptoms, and antipsychotic drugs have undesired effects. To address these issues, exploring new approaches is necessary. Cannabis derivatives, specifically ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), show potential as alternative mood-stabilizing treatments for bipolar disorder.
