Heavy cannabis use, especially with potent varieties, can induce acute psychosis, particularly in individuals with mental illness. Additionally, cannabis use can lead to acute functional psychosis with hypomanic characteristics. In patients with bipolar affective disorder (BAD), a longer duration of cannabis use is associated with longer manic episodes.
