Coase's View on the Relative Strengths of Centralized and Decentralized Systems

Ronald Coase's work reframes the debate about the superiority of decentralized systems (markets) versus centralized ones (firms, governments). He argued that neither system is inherently better; instead, each is more efficient for certain types of activities. The choice between them is not a matter of subjective judgment but is determined by the market itself. Through competition, the market delivers an impartial verdict, punishing firms that inefficiently expand their internal operations or those that rely too heavily on outsourcing, thereby ensuring that the more efficient organizational structure prevails for any given economic task.
