Measuring Utility in Consumption Units via Quasi-Linear Preferences

A significant and useful implication of the quasi-linear utility form, u(t,c)=v(t)+cu(t, c) = v(t) + c, is that overall utility is measured in the same units as the good that enters the function linearly (in this case, consumption, cc). This structure allows for a direct interpretation of the non-linear component, v(t)v(t), as the value of good tt (e.g., free time) expressed in an equivalent amount of the consumption good (e.g., bushels of grain).
